Thailand to Expand Visa-Free Access, Announces PM Srettha
In a move to boost the country’s economy through tourismThailand’s government under the leadership of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, has announced plans to extend visa-free travel privileges to citizens of additional countries. This initiative follows the government’s Visa Exemption Scheme, which has recently granted visa-free access into the country for travelers from China and India.
Visa-Free Travel Discussions
Prime Minister Srettha, alongside David Hurley, the Governor-General of Australia, explored the potential for a mutual visa exemption scheme during a meeting at the Government House. This scheme aims to facilitate more travel and business exchanges between the two nations.
Additionally, the Thai government delegation mentioned that it is optimistic about securing visa-free agreements with European countries within the Schengen area as well. Should these discussed agreements become official policy, Thailand could see an influx of Western tourists, who have yet to return in the same numbers during the pre-COVID pandemic period. However, it remains relatively unclear whether the same privileges will be granted to Thai citizens hoping to enter the Schengen area without a visa.
Tourism Figures and Expectations
Despite drawing approximately 28 million international tourists and generating 1.2 trillion baht in revenue last year in 2023, Thailand’s tourism sector has yet to reach its pre-pandemic peak of nearly 40 million visitors and 1.9 trillion baht in revenue.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) notes that Malaysian and Chinese tourists were the top visitor groups last year. However, with over 533,000 Chinese tourists already visiting by February 1, 2024, Thailand is on track to significantly boost its tourism numbers. The Tourism and Sports Ministry is confident that Thailand can attract 35 million foreign visitors this year, bolstered by the 3 million arrivals in January alone.
