E-Visa System Now Available at ALL Thai Embassies and Consulates Worldwide

Visa Exemption Scheme Thailand

On December 17th, 2024, Thailand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, presided over the launch event for Thailand’s global E-Visa system. There he announced that Thailand’s E-Visa system would be available at every Thai embassy and consulate worldwide at the start of 2025.

This is a welcome development for travelers of all kinds to Thailand. It means that for the majority of Thai visa applications made abroad, an in-person appointment at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate will not be necessary.

What Is the Thai E-Visa System?

The Thailand E-Visa system is an online platform accessible via a website that enables travelers to Thailand to apply for visas remotely with digital documents instead of in-person with paper documents. Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) created the platform to reduce congestion at Thai embassies and consulates, which often had high caseloads of tourist visa applicants, among others.

Applicants can apply for several types of visas through the E-Visa platform, not just short-term tourist visas. It will also be the primary platform for the soon-to-be-mandatory Thailand Electronic Travel Authorization system

The Thai visas that can be applied for through the E-Visa system include, but are not limited to:

How to Use the Thai E-Visa System

Using the E-Visa system is simple, as applicants need only to visit the E-Visa website, select the visa they wish to apply for, select their location, and follow the on-screen instructions. The visa application will be processed by the Thai embassy in that country and, if the application is successful, the visa will be emailed instead of physically affixed to the holder’s passport.

The main difficulty of using the Thai E-Visa system comes from preparing the visa application and all of the required documents. Most Thai visas require a collection of documents prepared in a certain way, and with the E-Visa system, these documents must be uploaded and submitted electronically. This adds a layer of complexity and is another opportunity for things to go wrong and lead to a rejected application.

Despite this, it is still far more convenient to use the E-Visa system than:

  1. Preparing paper documents
  2. Making an appointment
  3. Traveling to the embassy
  4. Standing in line,
  5. Then hoping to be seen by a consular officer before the embassy closes

It is important to note that applicants must physically be in the country where the Thai embassy they are applying through is located, or they will face severe consequences. For example, the DTV requires applicants to be outside of Thailand when they apply for it. If an applicant in Thailand tries to apply for the DTV using the E-Visa system and claims to be abroad, they will be guilty of fraud and may be subject to prosecution.

Expansion of the Thai E-Visa System in 2025

Previously, the E-Visa system was not available in all countries, as not all Thai embassies were equipped to process online visa applications. Therefore, applicants in some countries could apply for visas through the E-Visa system, but others had to appear in person at a Thai embassy or consulate if they did not support the system.

Throughout 2024, the MFA increased its efforts to modernize the remaining Thai embassies and consulates around the world to enable them to process E-Visa applications. By streamlining the visa application process and eliminating the need for crowds and long lines of visa applicants, the MFA hopes to attract more tourists and expats to the country and improve Thailand’s image as a modern, digitally connected country.

These efforts have paid off, and the MFA is poised to enable E-Visa applications from anywhere in the world where there is a Thai embassy or consulate, effective January 1st, 2025. This expansion is expected to improve the effectiveness of visitor screening, reduce paperwork, and integrate databases with other relevant agencies for better security.

For travelers to Thailand, this development will make applying for Thai visas from abroad faster and more convenient, especially for those who are transiting through other foreign countries to reach Thailand.
