COVID-19 Cases See Summer 2025 Resurgence In Thailand

Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin, Director-General of the Department of Medical Services, noted that the early arrival of the rainy season, along with the reopening of schools, had created conditions that supported faster virus transmission. He also pointed out that this period typically sees more influenza cases, which share symptoms with COVID-19 (such as fevers, sore throat, and coughing), making it harder to identify and contain infections early.

Dr. Suthat Chottanapund, Deputy Director-General of the DCC, added that respiratory illnesses often increase during the rainy season, especially among students. Close contact in classrooms allows the virus to spread more easily, contributing to a faster rise in daily infections. While this seasonal pattern is not new, the scale of COVID-19 cases in 2025 has placed extra strain on healthcare facilities already dealing with flu and other respiratory illnesses.

While the majority of cases are reported as mild, more people are seeking hospital care. Medical professionals are concerned about high-risk groups, such as older adults and those with pre-existing health conditions, who may experience more severe symptoms or complications.

New COVID-19 Variant in Thailand

Adding to the concern is a new COVID-19 variant called N.1.8.1, nicknamed “Nimbus.” First identified in travelers from East Asia to Europe, this variant shows higher transmissibility and, according to some studies, partial immunity-evading properties. Though current vaccines and antivirals still appear to reduce severe symptoms, health authorities are closely monitoring the spread.

Thailand is among the countries experiencing a surge in Nimbus cases. Those who have tested positive for the new variant of COVID-19 often do not experience common symptoms such as fever or a persistent cough, but may instead feel fatigue, congestion, shortness of breath, and a sore throat.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has not yet classified Nimbus as a variant of concern, but its quick spread has warranted international attention.

What is Thailand Doing About COVID-19?

Though the Thai government has not announced new lockdowns or strict mandates, public hospitals and some private medical facilities have already updated their COVID-19 protocols. 

These protocols include requiring patients to undergo COVID-19 testing before receiving certain treatments, particularly for procedures that involve hospital admission or direct contact with medical staff. Travelers or residents seeking non-emergency care may face these requirements even if they show no symptoms.

The DCC is also encouraging the public to follow health safety measures, such as wearing masks in crowded spaces, maintaining hand hygiene, and getting booster vaccinations. 

Are There New COVID-19 Travel Restrictions in Thailand?

As of this writing, Thailand has not reintroduced COVID-19-related travel restrictions, as travelers can still enter the country without showing proof of vaccination or a negative test result.

However, the situation remains fluid, and restrictions may be reinstated if COVID-19 cases remain alarmingly high. Possible measures could include mandatory mask use on flights and in transit hubs, health screenings at points of entry, or updated precautionary recommendations for high-risk travelers.
