DTV Visa Thailand: The New Thailand Digital Nomad Visa
The New Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)
The Thai government has recently unveiled the “DTV Visa Thailand,” known as the Destination Thailand Visa, designed specifically for digital nomads in Thailand. It comes alongside a raft of other immigration updates and additions intended to increase tourism in the kingdom. While final details have not been released, so far it appears that this visa will be ideal for remote workers who want to make extended stops in Thailand for working vacations without constantly worrying about their immigration status.
Announced Details of the Thailand DTV Visa
Details of the Thailand DTV visa are not finalized and are subject to change. However, a general picture of the visa can be created based on the government’s announcements and comparisons to similar long-term Thai visas. At present, this is what a DTV will offer its holders:
- A 5-year, multiple-entry visa. Holders can enter and leave Thailand an unlimited number of times without needing re-entry permits or new visas.
- Holders of the DTV may stay in Thailand for up to 180 days per visit and can extend the visa once per visit for a further 180 days.
- DTV holders can bring dependents with them on this visa, including children under 20 and spouses.
- The visa fee for the Thailand DTV Visa is 10,000 THB. The renewal fee is also 10,000 THB and must be paid with every extension.
Benefits of a DTV Visa Thailand
This visa will have several benefits for digital nomads in Thailand. At present these benefits include:
- The income requirements and visa fees are lower for the DTV compared to similar visas offered by other Southeast Asian countries.
- Holders can work for foreign companies remotely without restriction.
- Holders can switch to a different visa while in Thailand, though this will void the DTV and a new application process must be completed.
- There does not appear to be a limit on the number of dependents that can be included on the DTV, as with the LTR Visa Thailand.
However, the Thailand DTV Visa is not without its potential drawbacks. Holders will not be able to acquire a work permit or work for a Thai company on this visa. Furthermore, it is likely that holders will also have to report to immigration every 90 days, as is required with many other visas, even long-term ones such as the Thailand Elite Visa.
Eligibility Requirements for the DTV Visa Thailand
While details regarding how to apply for a Thailand DTV Visa are yet to be officially announced, some information on the requirements has already been released.
To be eligible for a DTV Visa Thailand, applicants must:
- Be at least 20 years old.
- Pay the 10,000 THB visa fee for the primary applicant and each dependent.
- Prove they have at least 500,000 THB or equivalent in a bank account to ensure they can support themselves.
- Provide proof of employment with a registered company (not finalized).
More news on the DTV should be coming in late June or early July 2024, according to the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Based on similarities to other visas though, it is likely that this visa can be applied for through a Royal Thai Consulate, a Thai Embassy, or the immigration office in Thailand.
