Resumption of Thai Citizenship
Dissolution of Marriage
Section 23 of the Nationality Act B.E. 2508 (1965) permits a person to resume Thai nationality due to the following circumstances:
- Person is a former Thai citizen.
- Renunciation of Thai nationality to obtain the nationality of the foreign spouse under Section 13.
- Marriage dissolution.
Therefore, the person may file an official form for the resumption of Thai nationality with a competent official.
Minors Previously Holding Thai Nationality
Section 24 of the Act permits a minor to resume Thai nationality as follows:
- A minor who previously lost their Thai nationality.
- Following parents who hold any nationality other than Thai.
- Are below the age of 20 (as a minor).
As such, the person may file an official form for the resumption of Thai nationality with a competent official within 2 years upon reaching 20 years old. The discretion of granting or denying the request is up to the Minister.
For instance, Bee held Thai nationality when she was 17 years old in 2020. Then, she decided to acquire Australian nationality following her parents and renounce her Thai nationality. Three years later on 6 August 2023, she chose to resume her Thai nationality at the age of 20. Therefore, Bee has until 6 August 2025 to submit a form of resumption of Thai nationality with a competent official.
