A common question amongst foreign nationals is whether you can apply for a Thai Privilege Visa as a non-immigrant visa holder. Whether it’s because of the flexibility in options, the wonderful quality-of-life additions, or a longer stay in the country, there are numerous reasons why someone would make the switch.
According to Thai immigration law, foreign nationals cannot hold a non-immigrant visa and a tourist visa simultaneously. Non-immigrant visa holders can apply for a Thai Privilege Visa, but because a Thai Privilege Visa is considered a tourist visa, you need to choose one or the other. But, this does not mean you will have to cancel your non-immigrant visa right away. You can still remain on it until your Thailand Privilege membership ID gets issued.
Where can I apply as a non-immigrant visa holder?
You can apply either in Thailand or overseas. However there are some things to keep in mind:
- If applying in Thailand, you can submit the application and pay the fees, however you will need to cancel your non-immigrant visa prior to receiving your membership ID. Choosing this route means you can get your new visa stamped at the nearest Thai immigration center.
- If applying outside Thailand, you can keep your non-immigrant visa until its effective expiry date and then after it expires, you can apply for the Thailand Privilege Visa. Another option is to leave Thailand, wait until your non-immigrant visa expires and you receive your membership ID, then return to Thailand to acquire your Thai Privilege Visa at the airport.
Thai Privilege Visas are a magnificent gateway into Thailand for foreign nationals and its perks are simply irresistible. Whether young, old, or already on a visa, there’s always a chance you may want to take the plunge and switch over from your current visa to a Thai Privilege Visa.
