Canada Dependent Visa Requirements
To sponsor a Canada Dependent Visa, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident living in Canada
- Be able to prove that you can provide for the basic needs of your child
- Be able to prove your relationship with your child, either by a birth or adoption certificate
- Must not be receiving income assistance, except for reasons of disability
- Must not have a history of previously sponsoring someone else and not providing the necessary support
- Must not be under immigration investigation
- Meet the income criteria
- Have no criminal record
You will also be required to sign an agreement that states you will provide for the basic needs of your child such as housing, clothing, food, and medical expenses not provided in the public health system. This agreement will hold you responsible for 10 consecutive years if the child is under 22 years old or until they reach 25 years old, whichever comes first. However, if the child is over 22 years old, you will be held responsible for 3 years.
Alongside this, your child will need to meet the following requirements to be eligible for a Canadian Child Visa. They must:
- Be under 22 years old
- Be the biological or adopted child of the sponsor (you)
- Not be married or in a common-law relationship
- Be approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to receive a visa
If your child is over the age requirement, they may be considered for the visa if:
- They have depended on your and your partner’s financial support before the age of 22, OR
- They suffer from a physical or mental condition that prevents them from being able to support themselves
